Haslam (R) Pushes to Raise Taxes Despite Billion Dollar Surplus

From Rocky Top Politics:

“After over-collecting $2 billion dollars from Tennessee taxpayers, Gov. Bill Haslam today said he thinks Tennesseans are not taxed enough and wants to raise the taxes on that most basic of middle class commodities:  gasoline.

Reports indicate Haslam is trying to sugarcoat the tax increase by promising to “index” the taxes (meaning they can go up without additional legislative approval) and to cut a little from the food and/or sales tax rate.

Sure.

What is astonishing is that this proposal comes on the eve of the inauguration of Donald Trump as the next President…Trump was elected by middle class outrage over politicians who do dumb things like, well, raise taxes when you are sitting on a $2 billion surplus.”

  1. Okay. I know we are lucky to have low gas prices now. Haslim wants to raise gas taxes. He want to reduce food taxes—but how much. If he raises gas taxes the trucking companies may raise their rates. The trucks bring our foods to the grocery stores. Won’ t this cause our food prices to go higher. Any economist out there with answers?

  2. 2010, Haslam trying to get elected:

“It’s important for our state to maintain a sound infrastructure, but we can’t add to the burdens of Tennessee taxpayers. I will conduct a top-to-bottom review of the Tennessee Department of Transportation, along with all other state departments and agencies, to find ways to use taxpayer dollars more efficiently and effectively. I will carefully examine how much money is actually going towards servicing roads and bridges versus administrative functions and make sure our tax dollars are being spent on our highest priorities.”

Or…..I’ll oversee approval of $6 BILLION we don’t have in transportation project approvals.

  3. Haslem’s gas tax increase of approximately 6 cents a gallon for gas
11 cents a gallon on deisel fuel. I destest those politicians stating TN is under
taxed. That is the reason folks move here as their own state over taxed folks
living on a fixed income causing them to move. An increase in fuel tax is so wrong and it is impossible for Haslem to ever imagine what it feels like living paycheck to paycheck and purchasing food to feed their family. Part of this
project for increasing is to build more greenways in TN. walking and bike trails are in this increase in fuel taxes.
